Introducing the Bishop

Saturday, July 26th, 2008
Last Saturday, my friends and I went to the House of Blues on Sunset for the Bishop Lamont album release party and performance. I wasn’t familiar with his music, but his actions over the course of the night proved him to be an outstanding performer and an amazing man. As an artist of Aftermath Entertainment and west coast hip hop, he exuded masculinity and rhymed about the realities of life, yet he managed to be a true gentleman at the same time. Not only can I not get his performance out of my mind, but his smile… His genuine smile that showed his kind and caring heart for his fans and family made an impression on me. Standing within the crowd, he warmly greeted his fans with humility and constantly thanked them for their support. Every time he passed by our booth my heart would race not because he was a (semi)celebrity, but his overwhelming sincerity was so touching. His physical hotness might have had a factor to my palpitations too. Then he got on stage to perform, using his lyrics to delineate the testimony of the journey that he’s been through. He was charming and charismatic, and his talent was undeniably amazing.

Since we were with a radio station, we got to go into the venue for free and early, before the audience came in. Walked in during Bishop Lamont’s sound check.

Our job was to set up the posters around the venue and the booth and pass out free merchandise during the show. Jane and Allen setting up.

Me and Jane waiting for the show to start.

I particularly enjoyed this show because so many other artists came out to perform. Up and coming artists 3Strykes and Iz Real had some great sets as opening acts. Glasses Malone’s performance was also memorable. Other performers included Taje, Prime and Jihad. This picture shows Warren G during his act, a surprise guest who also came out to support Bishop. The crowed went wild.

Another shot of Warren G. As he entertained the audience with everyone’s favorite and classic song ‘Regulator’, I couldn’t help but to remember the origins of G-Funk and Westcoast hiphop. Ending him was the perfect way to wrap up the show that introduced the next generation of hiphop, Bishop Lamont, to the world. Sorry for the blurriness.

Happy Birthday

Have lots to write about but studying for finals has been all that I’ve been able to do this week. Will write more after Friday, but I just had to wish my favorite living celebrity, Jennifer Lopez, a very Happy Birthday. Happy birthday Jennifer Lynn Lopez! You’re looking as lovely as ever. Motherhood definitely suits you!

Operation Dinner Party

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Pictures hung, grocery shopping done, fresh flowers bought…. I hosted my first dinner party!

I have friends and guests over my apartment all the time to hang and drink and what not, but last night was the first time I hosted a “formal” dinner party. I cooked and entertained a total of seven adults and two kids! Everything went swimmingly and everyone had a good time. Even my mango salsa was a hit! Operation 1st dinner party everrrrr– success.

Hello, Mr. Wonderland

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008
Yeondoo Jung is wonderful. He’s so wonderful that he’s made a Wonderland, where he brings children’s imaginations to reality. The drawings remind me of the oil pastel crayon drawings that I used to do when I was a child. The ones that he’s chosen for this project are particularly detailed and whimsical, and he does a brilliant job of translating these visions to real life. Check the drawings/photographs out here. Thanks to design*sponge for featuring this artist on her blog.

What it means to be “Bergmanesque”

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Just finished watching my first Ingmar Bergman film, Scenes from a Marriage. So many of my favorite directors like Woody Allen and Eric Rohmer are influenced by him, and I have come across a lot of references to his work that it felt only natural for me to start watching his movies.

Scenes from a Marriage was a good choice to start , I believe. The dialogue, the movement of the camera, and the probing of the relation between two people are reminiscent of many of Woody Allen and Roher’s movies. Or should I say that Allen and Rohmer’s films are reminiscent of Bergman’s style? It will be an exciting process to analyze Bergman’s influences on such directors as I watch more of his films and learn about what it means to have “Bergmanesque” qualities, a term I often came across but had no idea what it meant.

“We’re emotional illiterates. We’ve been taught about anatomy and farming methods in Africa. We’ve learned mathematical formulas by heart. But we haven’t been taught a thing about our souls. We’re tremendously ignorant about what makes people tick.”

-Johan, Scenes from a Marriage
