Mike Shinoda.

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Mike Shinoda’s Glorious Excess (DIES) opened at the Japanese American National Museum yesterday. This is the second solo exhibition by him at JANM, an extension of last year’s Glorious Excess (BORN). Janice and I went to the members-only conversation session held today on behalf of Audrey Magazine.

Mike Shinoda was interviewed by Roger Gastman. It was a real intimate setting, yet MS tried his best lay down the basics in terms of his background and where he comes and how he got to where he is in his art.

After some interviewing, there was an extensive Q&A session with the audience, and a viewing of the short film that accompanied the exhibit.
Glorious Excess (DIES) explores the public’s obsession with the celebrity lifestyle from the viewpoint of a unnamed skeleton man who appears throughout the exhibit in different forms…

He was born in last year’s exhibit and meets his death at this year’s. This casket is MS’s first non-canvas installation, i believe? I might be incorrect.

Tabloids, celebrities, excess, music quotes and musicians depicted. The importance of such things to this artist is significant because it comes from his view as a celebrated musician who also holds the ability to express his opinions through other media. What a rare talent!

Lennon depicted, part of the “4 Seasons”, where he also paints Andy Warhol, James Dean, and Kurt Cobain. All celebrities who died ‘tragic’ deaths.

MS walked the audience through the exhibit, which I thought was very nice. That girl clutching the skate deck looks ecstatic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment. It’s not everyday the artist dedicates himself to help the public understand his work. It is when people like Mike Shinoda produces something that expresses an idea and shares it to inspire more creative thinking is when one is called a true artist(imho). That second part is really important, I’ve met many artists who just leave their work as is, in a ‘take it or leave it’ sort of way. Sometimes that could be cool, but it’s even cooler when an artist tries to make his art open for interpretation in an inclusive way.
Gotta add me and jan here.
GLXS (DIES) ends October 4. Go see it! More pictures from today’s event here.

lotto.

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

Everyone’s talking about the lotto these days. My coworker updates me on the jackpot amount everyday. It’s fun talking about what we’d do with hundreds of millions of dollars. The more we get into detail about the type of travels we’d go on, the amenities of the house we’d buy, the bells and whistles of the car we’d have custom made, the more exciting the thought of having so much money gets.

It’s funny how easily we think that more money can buy us a better quality of life. Actually, it kinda scares me to think how easily I could be tied to money and the things it could buy me. Yeah, I definitely don’t think I’m ready for wealth right now.
My coworker said that he’d still come into work tomorrow if he won the lottery today. I’d want to do the same too. I’m content with the life I lead right now and the place that I’m in, including all the goods and the bads. Totally looking forward to the lessons to be learned in the future, and the person that I’m going to be. If the amount in my bank account changing would jeopardize any of that I’d rather stay ghetto, haha. Oh, but one thing I’d allow to change is my consumption of ice cream. I want to taste every ice cream flavor in ze world!

12-14/365

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

Confession: so I didn’t take a picture on 8/27. In my defense, I did absolutely nothing that day.

An extra pic to make up for that day. The online store is going to open soon, so excited! We’re shooting for mid-next week.

Every Friday I eat lunch in my car, while driving (dangerous, but necessary). Yummy gyoza yesterday.

Record hot temps today, even by the beach. It’s never been over 80 degrees in Redondo. The high was 92 today, ridiculous! Spent the day in the sun, im burnt like toast now.

uhh… no she didnt

while i have no mercy for whack korean girls, i loveeeee the boys. they’re cool and definitely FIERCE in their own way. though i’d never want to fight with my man about who gets dibs over using the eyeliner first or wearing the new bangle i bought last weekend, i love G-Dragon’s style and confidence. so hot, it rules over any signs of ambiguous sexual orientation.

This is the only picture I took while visiting GRNY‘s “Panelists V” show a few months back. The artist of the two lower images, Hellen Jo is nominated for the 2009 Ignatz Award in the “Promising New Talent” category (via angryasianman). Her work stood out to me at the gallery because 1) it was done in watercolor (my fave medium), and 2) she depicted spunky little asian chicks messing around. loveit. Digging through her blog a little bit, she’s just as cute as her paintings are. And she actually explores perspectives from different women’s point of views as well.

Or maybe she just likes how these images look. I want to talk to her. And I want to read her comic, Jin&Jam.

9/365: prayer post-its

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

This past Sunday YNCC started on a new sermon series called “Prayer”. The power and need for prayer is perfectly expressed in this concise title. As an act of faith, the congregation has written their prayer requests and posted it on a board in our church’s foyer. Please join us as we pray for each other with humble postures to our powerful God. More prayer requests here.

day 7&8: weekend no. 34

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Yesterday, I went to Kollaboration’s Acoustic 3 show at the Ford Amphitheater. Beautiful outdoor venue, very chill. Perfect setting to listen to unplugged sounds.

I saw this on a Vine St wall at Amoeba. Pretty cool.

Today was the day to chill. Rode my bike around the neighborhood and watched the sunset.

Summers are beautiful here, come visit me.

QT, you basterd

There’s something about watching a film on opening weekend under the legendary Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. The experience of watching Tarantino’s latest on its curved screen and seating arrangement was so retro, so true to the silver screen magic that Tarantino knows well of and attempts to reinvent with his innovative ways.

The 2hr45min run time kind of killed me (we watched the midnight showing), but I felt it was necessary to include all the Quintessentially Quentin elements in it: bloody romance, aesthetic fight sequences, and all the rest of his visionary style… And maybe it’s because the subject matter dealt with the war, but I also felt this film was much bigger in scale than previous ones. Bigger cast, better graphics, better budget? No idea how all that stuff compared to Pulp or the KillBills. But it was nice to see his extravagant style being carried out in such a large production.
The audience was great too, which I think is a large part of one’s movie experience.
Im not too mad at QT for making such a long film. Coming home late last night gave me an excuse to stay in bed this Sat morning to just veg out and think back on how great of a filmmaker he is. haha. hungry.
