The second part of my interview with Bai Ling is up on Audrey Magazine’s blog.

It was fun interviewing her. We had dinner at Veggie Grille on Sunset, where I just turned on the recorder and chatted with her over our chinese chicken salads. The conversation was really natural. At the end of the meal, I had enough material to call it an interview. After the red light turned off we talked about more personal things while sharing carrot cake for dessert. She’s cool. Just wants to be heard, like everyone else. Check out the interview here .

Her Name is Bai Ling, Bai Ling.

My meeting with Bai Ling is up on Audrey Magazine’s blog. She talks about her childhood days in China, her singing career, the eight spirits living inside of her, and lots of other things. We talked for so long that the editor cut the story down to two parts, lol. I think the second part is coming out next week.

My camera broke that week and I was freaking out! Luckily, the Social Trust came to my rescue and took some amazing pics for us.

There’s a cozy little picture of the two of us in there too. Is she even looking into the camera?! lol

I’ve been fortunate enough to meet (and by meet i mean standing near them and stealing some shots) some really inspiring people in the last couple of days. First was Mike Shinoda who encouraged creativity and individuality through different forms of media, and today was Lynn Chen, actress in the new movie White on Rice (2009).
Not only is she beautiful and very passionate about her work, but she is open about the battles she had to fight to keep a balanced life as an actress in Hollywood. Janice is a darn good reporter too, who was able to speak with Ms. Chen about her personal insecurities to the eating disorder she struggled with. What I got out of photographing Ms. Chen was that she really knows how to keep it real. Check out her food blog, where she’s very candid about her life as an actress and the diet she maintains.
Curious to see her work, I gave up a little bit of tonight’s sleep time to watch the movie’s screener. She’s really good! AND the movie’s so cute! White on Rice opens in LA&OC on September 11, go watch it! Keep checking the Audrey site for the story to be up too.

Mike Shinoda’s Glorious Excess (DIES) opened at the Japanese American National Museum yesterday. This is the second solo exhibition by him at JANM, an extension of last year’s Glorious Excess (BORN). Janice and I went to the members-only conversation session held today on behalf of Audrey Magazine.

Mike Shinoda was interviewed by Roger Gastman. It was a real intimate setting, yet MS tried his best lay down the basics in terms of his background and where he comes and how he got to where he is in his art.

After some interviewing, there was an extensive Q&A session with the audience, and a viewing of the short film that accompanied the exhibit.
Glorious Excess (DIES) explores the public’s obsession with the celebrity lifestyle from the viewpoint of a unnamed skeleton man who appears throughout the exhibit in different forms…

He was born in last year’s exhibit and meets his death at this year’s. This casket is MS’s first non-canvas installation, i believe? I might be incorrect.

Tabloids, celebrities, excess, music quotes and musicians depicted. The importance of such things to this artist is significant because it comes from his view as a celebrated musician who also holds the ability to express his opinions through other media. What a rare talent!

Lennon depicted, part of the “4 Seasons”, where he also paints Andy Warhol, James Dean, and Kurt Cobain. All celebrities who died ‘tragic’ deaths.

MS walked the audience through the exhibit, which I thought was very nice. That girl clutching the skate deck looks ecstatic.

I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment. It’s not everyday the artist dedicates himself to help the public understand his work. It is when people like Mike Shinoda produces something that expresses an idea and shares it to inspire more creative thinking is when one is called a true artist(imho). That second part is really important, I’ve met many artists who just leave their work as is, in a ‘take it or leave it’ sort of way. Sometimes that could be cool, but it’s even cooler when an artist tries to make his art open for interpretation in an inclusive way.
Gotta add me and jan here.
GLXS (DIES) ends October 4. Go see it! More pictures from today’s event here.
