The stage that video as a medium is in nowadays is reminiscent of the late 60s when the Portapak was introduced. Through advancing technology, it is once again a medium that is easily accessible and ready for anyone to record a moving picture, but this time in digital format. Almost everyone has a video function on their cameras or cellphones, no? Taking it one step further than film, however, websites like Youtube and Vimeo have created an outlet for ordinary people to showcase their extraordinary talents to the world, instead of limiting the screening of homemade footage within one’s circle. The opportunity for many people to view a certain video at once rather than having a tape being passed around to be viewed one at a time is also a significant change. Even celebrities have arose out of this homemade video phenomena, round 2. And if you think of the innovators of video, would David Choi be considered this generation’s Nam June Paik? hehe.
Anyway, I feel like digitizing the medium has pushed the reset button in the way we shoot and view, but it’s also very different this time around too. So the question now is if this introduction of new elements in the beginning stages of homevideo for the better? And in what way would we compare the analog vs digital?
Just some thoughts I had while I anticipate the arrival of my new baby that comes with video capabilities. Can’t wait to make my own contributions to this new world! As meager as the outcome will be, just imagining the different possibilities of what i could do is super fun. I stayed up late the past few nights on Vimeo, exploring the way video compares to photography. Both of these are shot with the 5d2:

Going back to Nam June Paik, my mom just told me a funny story. I guess Koreans went ‘walala~’(her actual words) over him when he became famous in the states and invited him to come back for a TV interview. She remembers watching it as a teen growing up in Korea. He kicked off his shoes in the middle of the segment and put his feet up on the coffee table that was situated between him and the interviewer. He was wearing only one sock! She also remembers him wearing a loosened tie and an untucked shirt, which was a completely inappropriate way to dress and act for a respected person being interviewed on national television. I think the funniest part of this story is that my mom, after watching this person who had lived/studied/achieved some amount of success abroad act so differently compared to the customs in Korea, was in awe of his bravery! So taken by his ability to ‘think outside the box’, she excused his rudeness as a result of him being a ‘genius’! uhhh….
